Clawhammer banjo

Sara Grey has been playing banjo to accompany songs for more than 65 years. She lived for a brief time when she was six in North Carolina when her dad was decommissioned after the war, and she heard the banjo played there. Her dad, being a fiddle player, realized her love of this instrument and took her south from their home in NH to gather more and more bits about playing over a period of years. She was probably one of the first to play the old style in Northern New England back in the 50s. Sara formed a trio in high school with Stirling Klink, from New Hampshire and R.J. Plunkett from Thetford, VT, and the rest is history…she has been accompanying songs ever since. She has always used the banjo to enhance the song…not to overpower it: ”The song is paramount.” Sara has performed at venues and festivals throughout Europe, and the UK after living in Scotland for 46 years,as well as Australia and North America, and has taught at several banjo camps in the States and the UK, as well as teaching banjo for several years.
